YUMMMMMM!!!!!
« on: September 20, 2009, 22:51 »

We caught these this morning!!!

....could'nt take any more pics 'cos the battery went!!

Lightly fried 4 shallots in olive oil with a huge clove of garlic for a few minutes then added 4 large  chopped tomatoes. To that added a couple of big glugs of dry white wine, then added the clams and cooked with the lid on for 10 minutes. Remove meat from the clams add back to the sauce and added plenty of salt and pepper, freshly chopped parsley and a couple of tablespoons of (low fat) creme fraiche. Bubble up and add cooked spaghetti. Voila!!!
I added a fresh chopped chilli to mine......poor Karl overdosed on chilli yesterday.....a delish cucumber curry with saag aloo, so his stomach was'nt up to it!!!! LOL

Sorry....should have said!!!
They were so sweet. A real * to collect....they were so deep down....not always coming up immediately when we put the salt down the hole but most came up a little later. You have to have a real low tide to find them though. :D :D

well I never...see hundreds of empty razor shell on the beach (200m from front door) but never thought about the previous occupants being edible...how do you know where to dig?  Hubby and 2 of our daughters love shellfish ( I don't eat them myself) so I'll have so send him out collecting. Are they seasonal?

You either see a hole or a depression in the sand near the water's edge at a very low tide. If you check out youtube they have short videos on how to get them.
One thing I will say, is when they poke out of the sand after the salt has been put down, don't yank them out or they will break....just keep hold of them and you will feel when they 'give' a little, gently tease them out!
As far as I'm aware they are not seasonal....but then I eat anything at anytime!!

I've never tasted them, seen a few tv chefs cook with them and they look really tasty.

Think its time I took a trip to the coast.
What if the Hokey Cokey IS what its all about...

You want a nice sandy stretch of beach.  ;)

We used to collect these on Ryde sands, I  did'nt know you could eat them oh collected them for bait, the kids used to wait for them to spit when the salt irritated them.

'R' in the month advice sort of applies - May to August is when the little rascals generally spawn.
The Dales - probably fingerprint marks where God's hand touched the world

Razor clams, my favourite; far superior to scallops imo.

What time shall I come over Aggy?  :D

Yay!

You know what would be nice, lightly steamed razor clams in butter and garlic, on a bed of sea kale and with boiled sea beat on the side.

Remind me, why do we go shopping when this sort of thing is all around us?

I'm hungry now.
