Title: Turkey
Post by: chasechicken on May 01, 2009, 12:07
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has experience of keeping a turkey (or turkeys)?

Are the basics similar to chickens and do you recommend keeping both?  If we get one we'll keep him away from the hens but just wondering what your general thoughts are.

Also - will a larger "hen-house" suit or do they have other needs?

Thanks!

Darren

hi Darren,

Don't know anything about keeping turkeys either, just wondering why we don't see turkey eggs for sale, or am I missing something obvious? ???

Just had a look into it - apparently turkeys lay fewer eggs than chooks, and also they bury them in places so you can't find them.

They can be eaten though, but they don't seem to co-operate in leaving them around for us like chickens do...

I want one as a pet though so I don't mind...

Hi we have had turkey's most of them have been so tame and gentle but the last stagg was a nasty little so and so he was so vicious that I could'nt go in the pen with him - but I think he was a one off

They need the same sort of care as chickens they live quite happily together but you must keep them wormed  or the turkey's can get something called blackhead which is an intestinal parasite,

Also they like to roost so be warned oh has been hit in the eye several times by flapping wings when trying to put them to bed
