Cosmos heading towards the cosmos!
« on: November 05, 2023, 10:01 »
Good morning gardeners,
as you may know one of my weird ideas is to grow annuals over the winter.  All is going well except for the Cosmos who are heading skywards and producing flower buds.  Should I trim them back a smidge? ???

Cheers,  Tony.
Addendum,  Do ALL flowering plants produce more stems when cut back?

I think nearly all flowering plants do throw more stems when the lead one is cut.  The only ones I can think of which this wouldn’t work on are things grown from bulbs or corms, as the flowering stems are formed the previous year.

Cosmos are a half hardy annual, so might not overwinter like a hardy annual. They will need to be kept frost free at a bare minimum.  If that is going to be difficult, I would let them flower and enjoy them now.

Just a question Klefti. Do they make good cut flowers? I’ve never done cosmos but am considering them for next summer.

Sorry about the delay in responding missmoneypenny.  The first batch did all that was expected of them, they grew, flowered and are now well and truly 'over'.  The second batch are still hanging on.

Cheers,  Tony.

I love this flower they are so pretty and the foliage is as well.   I find them good for cut flowers.   Mrs Bouquet
