Help, something has been getting at my potatoes and I don't know what to do. Upon digging my potatoes I noticed that nearly all of them what looks like small tunnels going into them. They were planted in my back garden where nothing has ever been planted before. Can someone please tell me what's eating them and how do I get rid of it. I don't object to pesticides if that's what it takes. I'm growing to feed my household, not the local free loading insect population. Thanks!

How small are the tunnels? - could be slugs, wireworm, space aliens.

If the holes are small they're probably wireworms - larvae of the orange click beetle. You'll find small orange wiggling things in the soil. Apparently you get more in soil that was recently grass, so the problem should improve in future years. I was unsure until I dug a potato up with one of the little B*****s half way in!!  Problem with my maincrops is the wireworms start the holes off then the slugs get them, then ants/centipedes/woodlice take up residence in the hole. Yuk!!

Had a problem with me rocket last season !slugs although they are supposed to be resistant!.Desiree where dodo same problem. My mate on ajoining plot reckons KESTRAL are ok and this season he has no problems  My Maris Piper came out as hole ridden finger likking no starters about the size of a squirrels scrotum, so I wont be doing them again in a hurry!!!.i do have the opinion of chuck n chance , and if pants dont do it again!!!.
Still I try  I will get the little blighters eventually.
