Runny nose on new hen - any advice please?
« on: September 23, 2010, 17:10 »
Hi there,

After the trauma of losing several of our chooks, we have now taken the plunge and bought another five to go with our remaining two. I have them kept in separate arks to the existing ones  until I am sure all is well. This is where I need advice please! The mottled orp has a runny nose - it is a clear discharge but it keeps drying and gumming up her nostrils. When I wipe it clear she blows the odd bubble through her beak. She seems alert & perky, is eating and drinking and has no foaming etc in her eyes. However she does look quite pale but she is only 16wks and has a lot of white around her head so I guess that's not entirely peculiar.

Should I be heading for the vet or reaching for the Baytril, or just keeping an eye?
Thanks in anticipation of your help.

if you have baytril treat her and any other hens that have been with her. Is her chest rattly?
Staffies are softer than you think.

I can't hear any rattle but I'm not sure that I'm listening properly.... she seems to be sneezing now too - still bright but definately sniffly. As for Baytril, am I right in thinking it's 0.8ml per kg at 2.5%, twice a day?

I have never used baytril (my vet prescribes other antibiotics) so can't help you on that one so hopefully somebody who has used it will be along shortly. Does it not say on the label?

I have used Baytril but my vet has given  it  to me in a syringe.  I just have to give 2ml once a day into the hens beak.  It has worked very well.
2 Springer Spaniels, 1 Speckled Sussex,  1 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Welsummer, 2 Barnvelders and 2 silver Pencil Wyandotes.
