Earthing up - not Star Trek!
« on: May 30, 2012, 17:28 »
I know this has probably come up before, but.... can I use lawn clippings to earth up my maincrop spuds?
I'm really struggling to dig with a bad back, and dumping mowings would be so much easier!

If it's essential to cover with soil, I'll have to bribe the OH with more wine this weekend ;)

thanks. C

you dont have to earth up potatoes - we only earth-up to give us a better/bigger crop, and yes you can use grass clippings to earth up potatoes, it has been widely discussed on here - so you should be able to find lots of threads on the matter using the search bar, hope that helped  ;)

heres one thread which may help you - http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=77197.0

You earth up potatoes to prevent them going green from exposure to light at this stage of the season.  A mulch will do much the same job.
Cheese makes everything better.

The problem is the birds and beasties keep tossing the straw / grass clippings about while looking for bugs.      Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Thanks everyone.  I knew I'd read about it somewhere!  I'll give the birds something to play with, Tony.  :D
