What to do with old raspberry plants
« on: May 01, 2010, 22:16 »
Hi there

I have just taken over an allotment and on it, much to my delight, are lots of raspberry plants.

However, they are not in good condition.  The leaves are slightly yellow and long dead steams (some with brown shrivelled raspberries) are sticking out of the top.

I would imagine I chop these off and fertilise the soil but wonder if I am missing anything out?

Thank you for any advice  :D

Id cut them back hard so the plant can focus its energy into new shoots ,and use fish blood and bone to feed it with.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

let them fruit this year , then cut them down to the ground in autumn, dig out the ones you dont want, in february or march next year start to feed

Are there any new shoots coming up from the base? If they are Autumn fruiting you may get a crop this year otherwise it'll be next Summer.
Yes....cut back the dead stems and feed and see what happens! Something to look forward to. It's great to have plants already there...... :D
