I I have recently taken on a new plot and have got seem to be very good raspberry plants .

They apperar to be healthy with some grass growth that seems to dead .

My question is should i cut the grass back and cut them back and see how they go.

My main worry is that they have new growth on the old stalk does this make them early or late raspberries

Welcome! I was told to leave inherited raspberries for a year and just watch what they do, then mark the old canes with a bit of string or something for cutting back in the winter.

If they have signs of dead fruit on the canes, they are likely to be autumn raspberries tbh

Summer fruiting ones currently should have healthy looking leaf buds just about the burst up at least the top third of the cane.

There may also be dead canes amongst them with no grown on: these will be a different colour too I expect. As the season goes on and you can see which are dead, cut these out.

If theye are autumn fruiters, then they will start to grow new canes as soon as the weather warms up

Summer fruiters will begin to grow new canes from about May onwards

Best test is when they flower and fruit of course 

Iitw, I would remove as much of the grass from around them as possible, give them a feed of blood fish and bone and mulnch around the base of the canes with something --part rotted autumn leaves would do
