Land Cress
« on: December 18, 2010, 17:13 »
Hi

Done a google search on this & found someone saying it's a waste of time growing this.

They complained the stalks were woody & when blitzed in a blender, like shards of twigs in their soup.

By taking the leaves from the stems, A) It took a long time to prepare & B) Didn't have a watercress flavour.

Has anyone grown this & can comment ?

Thanks, Spotty.

Yes! :D We've grown it a few times and tried a few times without getting it germinate, not sure but this may have been a problem with the seeds. Absolutely love the stuff, it tastes just like watercress which is dear to buy in bunches from the supermarket and not fresh by any means. If they found it woody, I reckon they left it too long.

Try it, please. :)

We've had seeds from Premier Seeds Direct and other which I can't remember just now. The sowing seems to be quite critical though, very much on the surface with a dusting of soil. Our results have been intermittent as opposed to one pack of seeds working and another not.

I've grown American Land Cress and had no problems.  Tasted good too.

You can grow water cress in pots if they are stood in a tray of water. I regularaly also grow land cress and American land cress as well as other salad leaves - all seem to do OK. Obviously the leaves are the tenderest parts of the cress so just discard stalks as you would with herbs, rocket, parsley etc anyway.
