I bought some debris netting about a month ago now with the intention of covering my brassica bed which is abut 8ft by 10ft. I can't afford to buy MDPE piping to hold it up and was wondering if anyone has an alternative? It has to last through the winter, I was thinking canes with bottles on top.

Really need to get this done today as they are getting decimated by whitefly and caterpillars!

I bought hula hoops, sawed them in half and put them on canes for the same reasons as you. Got cabbage, caulis and sprouts under them

That conjures up images of you carefully sawing tiny crisps! 

It's a good idea though - where did you find the hoops!?

we found abandoned milk crates , placed 6 around bed and  covered with debri netting then placed bricks on top of crates, easy peasy lemon squeezy

Just a word of warning.  I had to eat my words over the mesh size and nothing larger than 7mm works for keeping out cabbage whites.

I got the hula hoops from local pound shop but asda have them for £2

I orginally made a blue hoop and debris netting structure but the calabrese and romanesco was soon pushin up uner it and lifting the edge up, so butterflies could get in

I now have one 1.3m high, made of wooden battens covered with debris netting.

The low ones are Ok for caulis and cabbages though
