Has anyone any idea where I can get a petrol/oil tank for this

 Engine: Single cylinder side valve (600 cc.) J.A.P. Mk.III.

Bore And Stroke: 33/8' diam. x 4' (85.7 mm. X 104 mm.)

Engine Speed: 1,800 r.p.m.

Fuel Tank: Fuel and oil tank built as one unit with separate compartments. Fuel capacity 1? gallons. Oil capacity three pints.

Clutch: Heavy duty single dry plate.

Gear-box: Three speed and reverse transmission by hardened gears running in oil. All shafts mounted on ball bearings. Differential gear for easy turning automatically locked when rotor is engaged.

Speeds: 1st gear--0.78 m.p.h.; 2nd gear--1.17 m.p.h.; 3rd gear--1.65 m.p.h.; Reverse gear--1.40 m.p.h.

Rotor: Speed 155 r.p.m. 18' diameter.

Power Take-off Pulley: 10' diam. 4' face. 450 r.p.m. 1,178 ft. per min.

Weight: 5 ? cwt. approximately.*

I need one to start my renovation. The machine itself is in good nick but the tank is missing?

I know just got carried away but I think I might be wrong.

I have found a name and model plate in the box of bits attached to it and it says that the model is a "Roteho", manufactured by "Rotary Hoes Ltd" of East Horndon Essex.

Can anyone shed any light on what I thought was a Howard Gem. I am new to these machines and I would like to do it justice.

Hi Phil,

It sounds like a Gem (maybe a photo would help) And it should say 'Gem' on the rotor chain casing on the side.

A couple of used tanks for Gems sold on ebay, but do keep a look out on there as they do come up from time to time

Howard machines were made in England by Rotary Hoes Ltd. I copied this from http://www.donaldantiquerototillers.com/British.html
"in 1938 Cliff Howard and Capt. E.N. Griffiths formed Rotary Hoes Ltd. in East Horndon, Essex for the production of Howard's machines in England. The facility was located on Station Road and the telephone number was HERONGATE 26 and 96. In the early 1950's the local authority changed the name from East Horndon to West Horndon the factory stayed at the same facility." This website has a lot of information on old machines.
