For information:

I found this whilst surfing the web - looks interesting - there's a dangerous method and a safer method at the bottom of the page:

Well I've heard of using diesel to remove rust, but that is a new one to me. :)

Thanks for that, the less time spent with a wire brush the better. :)

And the advantage of removing rust electrolytically is that it is 100% effective, getting right into the nooks & crannies - so it won't come back so readily  :D

Soaking them in Vinegar for 24 hours removes nearly all rust, cheap branded Vinegar will do.

"A damn good thrashing" with a rotary wire wheel at maxi rev's  is what's required.

Having restored the odd vintage motorcycle in my time, I'm always amazed at how far gone a motorcycle can be and yet restored by the enthusiast and the professionals alike.  The tinware can be just a filigree.  But needs to be kept even just for dimensions.

A mixture of cola and molases is the best  'they recon'.  Cheers,   Tony.

We have had this on here before swing swang but I have to add that these forums can't recommend anything which could be dangerous.

I think rotary wire wheels are definitely in the dangerous category if they escape...............
especially in the confines of a box trailer. :)
Its get out PDQ and bash the red button. :D

there  is an american product called evapo rust that I have seen great reports about, not sure if you can get it in the uk though, they did an experiment with a whole tractor engine and the results were near miraculous, everyone I know who restores telescopes swear by it as it doesnt remove any metal, and can restore the rust back to steel.
looks like there is a supplier here- http://www.evaporust.com/country/uk.html
