Homemade soup in jars
« on: August 22, 2009, 20:00 »
I already sell chutneys etc but am looking into selling soup during the winter. Has anyone any experience of selling soup in jars. I am particularly interested in whether the jars are sealed hot like chutney or sealed cold. Also how long it will keep for in the jar

Thanks

Kevin

Where will you be selling the soup?
Cheese makes everything better.

Wanted to know if you can keep tomato soup in jars, as well.
We've made a lot, and have been freezing it, but the freezer's just about full now  :(

I make sauce for pasta which is just like thick soup and pour it hot into hot jars and put the lids on straight away.  You need to hear the bubble in the lid go down.  Also do apples the same.  .  Ive used the pasta sauce upto 8months after and it is as if just made and the apples keep longer. But , wouldn't like to say it was legal to sell them done that way.  Couldn't you do them in a water bath to be sure.

I've made some for "personal consumption" and have done it hot (pulls the button down on the top of the jar when cooling - which I beleive makes it air tight) and have also kept if for a number of months (in a dark cold pantry).
