5oc tomatoes
« on: May 30, 2022, 19:54 »
More temperature panic! Overnight lows showing 5oc. And I’m in lanzorate with overnight lows of 17 and can’t get back to protect them 😐.

Nothing I can do but do you think they might survive??

In theory they won’t like it but it will depend on their exact circumstances.( and the accuracy of the local forecast)
I have covered my tomatoes with fleece, do you have anyone who is near your plot who could give yours some protection??
Overall rather annoying to have weather this cool as we enter June.
Keep digging

5C is quite cool, but won't necessarily be frosty. If it's cloudy it probably won't drop low enough at ground level, so fingers crossed.
Met office map not showing anywhere lower than 8C tonight, so unless you live on high ground, you should be ok.

I shouldn't worry Benny!

We're an hour and a bit away from you, and the forecast is 'cloudy after some rain', and the sun's up pretty early tomorrow too, so I'm not nothering even to cover them up!

Lucky you even getting away too - enjoy the sunshine, and DON'T WORRY!

Mine have a fair amount of purpling but on the plus side the windy weather has fattened up their stems.  They will get over it.

Only one seems to be suffering looking a bit grey. I pressume this is because of temperature?

Lets hope i get to eat some this year before the blight arrives!

I find tomatoes evoke the strongest feelings in me as a gardener, nothing else seems to have such a perilous journey from seed to plate. And so when they do it is hugely rewarding.

Absolutely, MissMP!

We have our main sets (35 plants) in strategic areas around 'The Turrets' and the GH, and since planting them, a further seven have gone into gaps in the flower beds, and there are still several plants from side-shoot cuttings going begging! (I'd never taken cuttings before, and didn't realise how dead easy it is to rise a new plant)!

I think the weather is teasing me! Just back from holiday to find my tomatoes have survived whilst I’m away. Now the forecast says it could drop to 7 degrees tonight.
Hopefully they won’t object to going below 10 degrees for a couple of hours. Growing tomatoes outside is like roulette.

It’s set to get seriously hot in a couple of days. Followed by a rainstorm.
Growster I am hedging my bets this year by planting half my tomatoes in my backyard, hoping they are less likely to get blight there. Last year was horrendous.

It's a sound plan, MissMP.

We do exactly that here, with three main areas as far from each other as possible!

Don't forget the soluble aspirin tweak, which now seems to be around a gallon of water, with a couple of tablets, washed over the plants once a week - it does seem to work!
