Double saucepans...
« on: September 23, 2011, 21:58 »
Anyone using these items nowadays?

My Mother always cooked porridge in one, and Mrs G used one at school to melt chocolate.

Er, that's it - so far...

Doubles are hard to find now, and you'd likely pay a tidy price for them.

Like MoS, I place a bowl over top a pot of boiling water to melt/cook delicate things.

Talking this through last night, we decided here, that it was because we had a Rayburn going all the time, to heat the house and water, and naturally, it made semse to use the top plate as much as possible!

This was in the fifties though, and the new double saucepan was looked on rather like an electric bread maker would be today!

I wish I'd kept it, but there again, I don't miss the old Rayburn that much - it was a bit too wheezy for us...

Interesting that Joy!

Marketing is all these days, and 'Porringer' sounds much more sellable than ' frugal double saucepan for those of you who only have solid fuel boilers...'!

It really was an innovation in 1956; my mum used it all the time!

I have a bain marie that came as part of my saucepan steamer set which looks a lot like a double saucepan, only without long handles.  I use it mostly when I'm making curds.

Most folks use microwaves for jobs that were done in the double pan  :D  Where's the romance gone ey that's what I want to know     That double saucepan always held such promise for me as something fantastic always emerged from it after much phut phutting for hours on end and the final palaver with steaming hot cloth.  Happy days  :tongue2:
