Mrs Growster makes a real Shepherds Pie.
I mean, she builds this edifice at a rate of knots, and from items she's coddled away for some considerable time - like several weeks, since the last lamb joint or even beyond that...
And the first - and the second and third question from yours truly, is "So what vegetable delicacies do you want to go with this concoction Mrs Growster...I'm just off down to the patch, and you can have anything unless it's asparagus or scorzonera?
(We have a lovely relationship which sometimes demands - yeah - humbles - such niceties...)
(Don't believe that last line - it's tosh...)
"Oh, S** it, I've had enough of kale, brussels, carrots, salsify, parsnips and the green stuff from down there; I want a tin of baked beans...".
And it is ever thus, as I'm still addicted to baked beans, and Mrs G still yearns for the times when we were younger, and had no worries, and life was for kids, and Heinz were the only name to hear, and.. and...and...

Baked beans did once grow, y'know, even if not on your own plot :nowink: :nowink: :tongue2:

KC, somehow, I knew you'd be here, listening carefully like the great person you are...
I could eat baked beans anywhere...
-
So why don't you grow your own beans for baking? They'd be cheap and plentiful, if dry. Mrs G could test a lot of recipes to find one you both love best ;) See, method to my madness :D
-
Actually, I'm with Growster.
I love an occasional tin of baked beans of said brand. (and easier when you're 100's of miles away from your plot in the antique motorhome).
-
Now Trills, you've just responded at the same time as DD, and that leaves me in a quandary...
Beans from the patch - lovely, but never enough.
Beans from a tin (Heinz), plenty, but not from the patch...
Go to one's roots, what were so special when we were young - runner beans, or baked beans...
As I get younger, these statements become more/less ponderable...
And baked beans are great straight from the fridge, when all else fails...
Runners just don't do that...

Baked beans of a certain brand were always eaten cold straight from the tin, on those long ago trips in the Hilman Imp estate with the matress slung in the back for a fortnights holiday driving down to Newquay ;) Happy days :)
-
Sorry guys but cold baked beans make me heave
But nice 'n'hot... different story :D
-

You don't keep a tin in the cupboard at all times? The Beanz, Meanz variety always used to be my staple, but now i have to admit to preferring the one made by the pickle people....

Actually we buy those four packs.... you never know when you might need one tin, or more :nowink:
-
wow I thought I was the only one who eats cold baked beans (must be that certain brand though), OH thinks I am weird but now I know I just belong to an elite bunch of folks with very good taste :D
-
Contrary to opinion I did not bring up my youngest son, Heinz did. He lived on Baked Beans from the age of 2 till 18 when he finally discovered veg and still has to have a tin when he comes home on a weekend.
Thank you Heinz.
-
yes, i confess, i'm also a lover of baked beans although i've gone over to the dark side - well Branstons :D they're my real comfort food
-
Fridge packs are the way forward now as you can take a bit at a time and keep the rest for later. Then recycle the plastic container for a storage jar ;)
-
I just store it in any placcy container that comes to hand (old marge tub)..no need to pay more for the beans than you have to ;)
-
and for some reason they don't taste the same when microwaved, i like them done in a saucepan, bubbling nicely, then for a real treat grate some cheese on top - heaven :D

Me too. But cold straight from the tin is a great delicacy too.
-
I used to love frying a couple of rashers and then throwing the beans into the frypan as well :)
Needless to say, I don't do it now cos of the fat intake!
-
mmm yummy we used to do that too :D
-
baked beans in the frypan then chuck on and mix in a bunch of skinned toms, fry the mix on a high heat until disgusting. Sheer ambrosia.
-
There used to be a baked bean omelette on the menu in a cafe near Moorgate...

but have you actually tried them, you may change your mind :D
-
Its probably a psychological block - just couldn't force myself to.
The adverts always used to show them on hot buttered toast - and thats how I like 'em or with egg 'n chips. Why eat 'em cold when they only take 2 minutes to warm up or do none of you like washing up ;)
-
They taste different cold sarajane :) I like them hot and cold, but like many others on here, snaffling leftovers from the fridge is a favourite snack or quick lunch option for me ;)
-
Cold baked beans are an absolute must!
Just a spookfull with cold pork, or corned beef, makes that a damned sight more pleasant than some glutomated squonch from a pot-noodle factory...
I ask you!
