Bantam advice pls!
« on: September 05, 2007, 14:28 »
I'm thinking of having a 3 or 4 bantam hens, I've the space for a run, coup etc. We always had bantys (old English Game), ducks, ex battery hens as kids (me dads mate used to work on lorries at Eastwoods battery farms so we had some hens in a right state that had been retrieved from back of lorry engines). So I've some idea on keeping poultry but i'd of course check up on such things.

What would you recommend as breeds? I don't want anything too fancy and not show stock class - pullets or POL prefered. I'd like em for the eggs but wouldn't be adverse to eating them - despatched humanley of course. I fancy Welsummers, but are these easily available in banty/minature form? Would it be just as well to go for standard Welsummers? What about Sussex's?

Anybody ideas for breeders in Nottm and surrounding areas. I came across this one via google, anyone now of her or her poultry?:

STRETTON, Helen Long Eaton, Nottingham Tel: 0115 972 4800 Silkies, Welsummers, Orpingtons, Cream Legbars also Silkies.

Thanks, amc

Dunno if this may be of interest in tonight's Leicester Mercury about the third ad down.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Banties in Nott's
Hello amc, I am waiting patiently for my Banties at the moment (2 weeks and counting) that are new chicks. Mine are from a lady in Cambridge, a mix of Partridge Wyandottes, and Wyandotte Buff Orpington cross. I am not sure which website but there is a breeder at Southwell, in Nott's. If you look around the sites there are one or two in our area. Happy hunting :D  Pete
