Parsnip leaves looking dodgy - is this serious?
« on: June 25, 2016, 14:27 »
When I checked my raised beds yesterday evening I noticed damage on the leaves of some of my parsnips. Any idea what the cause is and what I should about it... if anything? Thanks in advance.

i have the same thing, on my parsnips (just noticed today) and also on my celery?   I don't know what it is but looking forward to replies from people that do.  I have grown parsnips for a few years and it has never happened before. x

I had this problem back in 2012 which had been a wet early summer (rained from mid-June through July) and identified it as Leaf Celery Spot - apparently it is a form of blight, a fungal problem that affects the "Umbelliferae" group eg celery, parsnips, carrots, coriander etc often seed borne, and treatment seems to be similar to potato blight - remove outer leaves asap and treat with a fungicide or copper based eg Bordeaux mixture.

I didn't use fungicides and the roots harvested were fine that year

Thanks, BabbyAnn - as soon as I read your post I went straight up to my veggie garden and snipped off all the damaged leaves - taking care not to touch the fungus. I'll keep an eye on the plants for any further signs and get something to treat them if it recurs.

With the weather we are having I think we are going to get clobbered by every fungal an rot problem going.

My broad beans are showing signs of chocolate spot and the bulbs were starting to rot on a few of my garlic that I harvested today. Touch wood, the dreaded 'B' has not shown its face yet here.
