Help identifying plant
« on: March 09, 2013, 11:40 »
Hi everyone.

Having clear some surface weeds and grass etc I've found a row of plants but I do t know what they are. They are clusters of bulbs that are sprouting. I wondered if they were some sort of onion that has been left. Being in a spaced row I think it is more likely a veg than flowers but I don't know.

Could be chives. Mine, which get left in the ground and split when the clump gets too big, are starting to regrow and look rather like that at the moment.

It looks like a clump of shallots that weren't harvested and have started to grow again ;)

My first thought was chives but they look more oniony, like Mum says, probably shallots.

I'd go with something "oniony" (do the leaves smell?)

Leaves look a bit thick for chives, and a bit old for shallots at this time of year - could it be something like "Walking onions" or Welsh onions (if you suspect I'm guessing wildly you are correct!)

My Welsh onions have not died down and the photo looks practically identical to my chive that have started to sprout.

They don't look a bit like my walking onions either!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've crushed and sniffed a leaf and it is definately smelling oniony. I dont think it chives as the leaves are more flat than round. I think they must be some sort of shallot.

All the leaves on my chives are flat, its the stems that are round.
They do look like chives, there are lots of types.

Out of interest, my chives. Notice the striking resemblance!

It's not broken glass, by the way - it's ice from the freezer!

You are right they do look very much the same. I've dug a clump up and this is what one of the bulbs looks like.

7 clumps in all. Think I'll split them and pot them up for now. I was planning on interplanting chives with carrots anyway so this is a good find amongst the weeds!!

I went and had a look at my chives and the leaves look thinner and more cylindrical, that's why I said shallot  ::) :D

Time will tell
