Advice on cherry toms
« on: July 12, 2012, 11:32 »
I have a few Cherry tomatoes that are now ripe and I was hoping that I could leave them on until the whole vine has ripened.  I've noticed that a couple that are ripe have split, is this due to overwatering or are they just old now?

Should I just start to remove the individual red ones now?

I would suggest that you harvest as they ripen. The splitting is most likely due to being over-ripe although as you suggest over-watering or even inconsistent watering can also cause splitting.

Commercial tomatoes are treated so that the whole truss ripens at the same time, but our home grown tomatoes don't do that.  The first to grow ripen first generally.

Just pick and enjoy them at their best.  :)

Considering how much rain the UK has had this year, and how quickly a tomato plant can keep absorbing water, your splitting is due to too much water, so as Grannieannie says, enjoy them while you can because the weather is determined to take away what it can.

Just to add it was the ones in the greenhouse that split, but it was only three in the end that split.
