Does anyone here keep ex battery farm chicks? Do they make good allotment pets? What about for eggs??

if you are doing it for  sentimental reasons then go ahead  you can get them for as little as 50p a bird from chicken rescue sites  if you want to have them for  more than that buy from breeders or keepers . welsumers are fine for just egg laying . again  i suggest you read the posts on the site and also check out the " poulty pages "  :)

Hi Solo, we have 47 ex batt chickens at the moment.  They are VERY happy living in our garden, although they have their own 80 ft run.  They were as Muntjc said, 50 each from the Battery Hen Welfare Trust (WWW.BHWT.com), and at the moment I get up to 32 eggs per day.  AT first only 9 wre laying, but they have got better since they moulted.
