Not unless it gets wet, my run is covered as I got fed up with them not realising it's a good idea to go in in a rainstorm. and then sitting there looking miserable.  :roll:

Smells a bit when you turn it over tho' my hens used to sit on the fork as I was turning it ! waiting for worms etc  :lol:

The soil in the run may go sour because of the acidity of the chicken poo.  Sprinkling it with garden lime before digging it over should solve the problem.

if u contact your local council they always have free bark chippings all i do is go and pick it up saves me heaps of money and the girls love it xx :D

Tips for keeping bale of straw -
Keep your string from previous bales or only cut 1 string
REmove some straw
Use the spare string to loop around the part bale - double it so you can pull it tight in the middle and this should help you to retain the part bale.
