richy, do you find the soil stinks after a while?

Not unless it gets wet, my run is covered as I got fed up with them not realising it's a good idea to go in in a rainstorm. and then sitting there looking miserable.  :roll:

Smells a bit when you turn it over tho' my hens used to sit on the fork as I was turning it ! waiting for worms etc

The soil in the run may go sour because of the acidity of the chicken poo.  Sprinkling it with garden lime before digging it over should solve the problem.

if u contact your local council they always have free bark chippings all i do is go and pick it up saves me heaps of money and the girls love it xx

Tips for keeping bale of straw -
Keep your string from previous bales or only cut 1 string
REmove some straw
Use the spare string to loop around the part bale - double it so you can pull it tight in the middle and this should help you to retain the part bale.
