Metal Poles As Stakes??
« on: June 23, 2012, 12:49 »
Afternoon All :)

I have a number of metal poles from an old trampoline and also some old baby gates, seems a shame not to recycle them in some way so I thought about using them as stakes for plants, will this be OK?

I was a bit worried about rust though getting into the soil and on the shafts, would it be a wise idea to wrap them in gaffa tape or something first?

Any negatives to doing any of this you can think of?

Thanks in advance :)

I use any old bits of metal as stakes and never had any problems, I don't do anything with them either  ;)

In that case as a side note I picked up a bag full of a couple of hundred of old knitting needles from the local charity place for a couple of quid, stakes galore :)

The baby gates would be good for growing peas up.  I used an old extending clothes horse, you know one that you pull upwards, to grow peas up one year!

I recycled a broken metal bed. The end pieces are great for holding down weed supressing fabric etc. I guess they would do for peas too.
The long side pieces secure enviromesh draped over blue pipes. Its easy to move for weeding, saves messing about with hooks or bricks.
