Clearing an area of my allotment today and found loads of greenfly in the leaf litter.  What do people suggest I do?  I'm going to be having a bonfire soon, so should I just put it all on that, or would they simply die off if I bagged up all the leaves to make leaf mould?
On the very steep learning curve of organic veg growing!!!!

I thought they were sap suckers & needed live plants.  Do they hibernate - does anyone know?

No they normally nip up to Redditch for a winter gathering before dispersing all over your lotties.

But thats a good question I will look it up in my notes later.

I thought the same WG, they might though be happy for a while, if these are fresh leaves.

Just for clarification, BHC, we are talking aphids here, are we? :)

It`s still warm and even if they`re sheltering there they`ll soon disperse and hide amongst the plants,I have them on roses and clematis at the moment and had cabbage aphid on the sprouts.i think our winters are just too mild to control the populationand they`re around all year, just as the grass seems to grow all year now!

Certainly looked like aphids, although,  I must admit, I didn't inspect them in great detail.

Any ideas what to do with them?  I guess some must overwinter, as they give birth to live young!  Don't know how many natural predators will be around now, certainly haven;t seen many ladybirds etc!

If birds and other prediters did not constantly kill and eat the humble aphid, then after just 2 years there would be enough aphids to weigh more than twice that of the earth.

Who worked this out I do not know but it makes me think that I had better do my bit.
