measuring golden syrup
« on: June 05, 2020, 10:12 »
a conversion says 1 tablespoon = 25 gms.   the recipe calls for 225gms     -   that's 9 tablespoons of baking golden syrup.    Is that correct, it sounds an awful lot.   Hope to make flapjacks today.    thanks, Mrs Bouquet

There is quite a lot of syrup in flapjacks, and depends on the quantity of oats in your recipe..

Thanks Mum.  It is a BBC good food recipe:- 225 gms syrup, 375 unsalted butter, 200 gms soft brown sugar, 500 gms oats.   Just mix it all together and put into 20 x 30 tin.    Now I have typed it, it does look rather unhealthy !!!.     The trouble is I shall eat it all.  ::)    Mrs B

This recipe has less of everything, in it - so perhaps better just for 1  :D

You know the trick of standing the tin in a pan of hot water to thin it down a smidge.

Or did the recipe call for heaped tablespoons?

Cheers,   Tony.

Thanks Mum, that does look a lot better, so that's what I shall make.  I haven't got a food processor.  If I put, sugar, butter and syrup into a pan to melt and then stir in the oats gently, then put into tray, will that be ok ?

Yes, that will be fine. Butter, sugar and syrup/honey in a medium pan. Warm till bubbling a little bit. Take off the heat and add dry ingredients. Stir briskly then place in baking tray. Pop into oven at the recipe's time and temp. Let cool for a couple of minutes then mark deeply with knife or end of fish slice. Allow to cool and turn (or lever) out. Done.

You can add sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, some vine fruit (may harden in oven) with the oats.
