Wow... how many have you got there?

Mine are just getting used to the 'big outdoors' before I put them in the ground. I was feeling quite pleased with them until I went to the garden centre this week and saw their sweetcorn plants - mine are abot 4" tall.... theirs were about 18" or more and really thick and sturdy!

I bought 4 just to see what how they do! I'm hoping mine will get sturdier when they go in the ground. :(

Plenty of time yet, it's easy to get drawn in by the look of plants in a garden centre, but do you know where they were this time yesterday?

They could have been given a serious shock by being moved from a nice cosy greenhouse to the great outdoors without being hardened off.

There's plenty of time for things to catch up, they usually do.

I've got 90 hardening off to go in next week, hopefully after some rain.

In blocks with 18" spacing is recommended.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

90 plants DD!!!

Blimey!

What's the average number of cobs to a plant? I'm wondering if I should start some more off - or am I too late now?

1 - 3, depends on weather, soil, variety.............

You would probably just about get away with starting some more off.

I've got 9 seed grown plants hardening off at the moment (I lost a lot when potting them up).

Is 9 enough to create a "block" as I understand they need to be in a block to pollinate each other?

i always think of 4 as a 'block' plant them about a hand trowels width apart so that they touch and pollinate as they grow  ... i've seen 4 plants grown this way in a garden and all had cobs ... good luck :D

Sounds like a 3 x 3 block!

Oddly enough had 9 plants left over from full rows last year & planted them in a 3 x 3 block awy from the others - they did fine.

Thanks for that -  3 x 3 is what I had in mind, I just wasn't sure if it was enough plants, especially after seeing that pic and DD talking about 90 plants

If I get 9 cobs I'll be well chuffed

if you get just 1 cob and cook it as soon as you can after picking, it should be the sweetest corn you have ever tasted and worth ever little bit of effort :D

Scuse me butting in, sweetcorn is one of my favourite foods and I grew one plant last year  (the only one that germinated) and got one cob. This year I have 25 in and also 25 of a Mexican variety that grows to 16ft with 2ft cobs, all about 18 inches at the moment. I find the best way to cook them is straight off the plant and straight into the microwave. Leave all the tassles and leaves on, cook them for about 2 mins and then take all the bits off, absolutely delicious.
