Gooseberries being stripped already!
« on: May 26, 2015, 22:46 »
Anyone else suffering gooseberries being stripped by birds yet, or is it just me? Have some new bushes planted last autumn that were heavily laden and each day the number of berries is rapidly dwindling! Have seen those vile flying rats (wood pigeons) stuffing themselves on a neighbours berries. Is this normal so early? The berries are at least a month away from being ripe. Have decided just to net the entire plot lol, am so bored of fighting with birds, slugs, rats, foxes etc etc  :nowink:

The bed the gooseberries are in is always the last to be weeded as a weed (can't remember it's name at the moment) grows there and 'masks' the gooseberries.  I weed it last and then throw a net over the bushes for about the last two weeks before picking.  Has worked for the last couple of years and I'm not going to change my habits.  Also in that bed are the two red current bushes and I have no complaints about the crop.

Between Friday when I was last on the plot and today (Tuesday) the birds have eaten half my blackcurrants and redcurrants. Spent 4 hours netting everything :(

I can say it will be sawfly that has done this. I spray at the roots and all over plant in late summer and early spring. Forgot this spring and all srtipped that peed me right off.
Kind Regards
Bill

Sorry to disagree wil4025. It will be the birds that have done this. Sawfly will have stripped the leaves.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I've noticed the sparrows and tits are having a right go at the blueberries and blackberries.  I've netted the blueberries, to do all the fruit would be 2 cages 23'x22'

Woodpigeon do go for the half formed goosegogs not ripe fruit, i have never found it necessary to net just push a few canes in and connect with string to make landing tricky !

As for the "vile flying rats" they are very pretty birds who are a pain in the butt to growers but also taste great in a pie !

Been raided by them , have shot hundreds over the years but hate them ?.........No!

I save that for the slugs and caterpillars !

Just because you see spadgers and tits on the fruit bushes does not mean they are doing harm they may be taking insects which are on the plant.

Very unlikely that tits will be eating your fruit as they are insectivores.
