When I was a lad
« on: July 08, 2012, 14:29 »
When I was around 15, my grandad had a coop. He had 6 chickens. Their names were  Hettie, Lettie, Olga, Sarah, Clara and Cluck. Oh those eggs were so good. I'm 41 now, and living in Japan. Oh, I still want some chickens of my own !

Hi and welcome Sean! :D Is chicken keeping a popular pastime in Japan?

Thankyou :)

Not sure. I've heard that my mother in law had small ones. They were probably bantams. Will have to ask various demanding questions. She currently has no neighbors, I might see if I can get her back into it !

Konnichi wa - I never saw chickens in my three years out there.  I bet the fanciers are fanatical though if the koi carp owners are anything to go by!

Beautiful cockerels with long tails dragging on the ground feature a lot in Japanese art.

Its very rewarding, relaxing, and satisfying having chickens I do miss mine, you get nice tasty fresh eggs, they keep the lawn down (I haven't stoned cutting it since) and the eggs have 1/2 the cholesterol than mass produced ones so you can eat twice as many  :D

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs.  The findings showed that free-range chicken eggs produced the following results:
    • 1/3 less cholesterol
    • 1/4 less saturated fat
    • 2/3 more vitamin A
    • 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
    • 3 times more vitamin E
    • 7 times more beta-carotene

Just cut and pasted this, I just googled...  free range chicken eggs and cholesterol

That's very interesting if its true. I just wonder what commercially reared birds in America are fed?

I dont think its just the USA, but saying that the USA is very tough on things like chemicals in farm animals, but it could be half in the UK read it some place and I think it was the UK that was lower
