Red mite
« on: July 28, 2011, 08:23 »
I have had a red mite infestation in a wooden coop...I decided to buy a new plastic hen house which I'm pleased with but just wanted to che k how to carry on treating the chickens...I have treated the bedding in new coop with diatom and continue to powder the chicks......will the mites just die off if they have nowhere to live...??? Paranoid and itchy!

the good thing about plastic coops is that they are easy to take apart and wash to remove any mites. It is best to do this away from the ground you site the coop on.
You may still get the occasional redmite that was on the chicken or on the ground but regular washing and a sprikling of diaton on the bedding will soon put paid to them  :D

I hope you burnt your old bedding or at least double bagged it and sent it to the refuse centre and not composted it as mites can live for 30+ weeks without food.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I am planning on burning the bedding from the wooden coop...also contemplating burning the coop as well! The coop was free so nothing to lose ...don't really want those pesky things hanging around....

Spray or paint with Creocaote into every nook and cranny and the mites will live about 30 minutes. Don't let the chooks back in until it's dry though........
