I just bought a cheap bottle of supermarket home brand sweet, and poured it straight into a demi john with the sloes, i also put a table spoon of sugar in it.
Left for 2 months, It was very nice.
Hope this helps

It might be the glow from the tablecloth  ;)

Made it last night and the sugar has already nearly all dissolved.

Sloe Gin 2016: Well I got enough sloes this year, although it has taken three attempts to get enough! So they are mixed with gin and sugar, and are in a demi john fermenting. This year for the first time, I found three very small maggot type grubs floating around in the mix. I have not seen these before (although I shouldn't be surprised) I fished them out with a spoon, and will make sure I filter the sloe gin thoroughly next April. I still have about half a litre of sloe sherry left which is very nice. Last years sloe gin though was exceptional!
How about the rest of you harvested your sloes?
Cheers

I bought one of those strong Turbo Yeasts to achieve a very high alcohol level in five gallons of 'vodka', and it didn't quite make the mark, so there is a little residual sugar lurking in there somewhere...

I'm going to try and use some dried sloes for some sort of embrocation, and might even try dried rose hips as well, as they could bring a nice flush to the mixture!

In any case, any of the home made wine benefits from a splash of cheapo lemonade or tonic, so it won't be all bad!

Wash the sloes in a bowl full of water giving them a good stir, most of the sloes with maggots will float because of the air in the tunnels !
Not a bad thing to leave a couple in , worm in Tequila style as it slows the squeamish down and the bottle lasts longer ! :)
