achocha ladies slippers

I brought home half a carrier bag on Friday and another tonight. Far too manny for little me to eat. There all big and will need de seeding before eating. Can they be frozen or made in to preserves?

Sorry Ema.  Never tried freezing them, so I don't know how they come out.  I dried surplus ones in the dehydrator and used them as a green pepper sub in slow cooker pasta sauces and chillies.

What about roasting and freezing them.  Trasco do a bag of frozen roasted\chargrilled peppers and they are quite useful to have around over the winter  :)

Picked a fat baby it had black seeds does that mean it's ready or will they get bigger?

They get bigger so that the outer wall of the fruit separates from the pith and seeds and they go hollow in the centre.  You can eat them at all stages from very small before the seeds form, to fully ripe, but they can get dry if you leave them too long.

Try them at every stage and see what you like best  :)

Wasn't fond of the furry texture inside I think I'll cook them great fillers for soup and pasta sauces ect

The furry inside only develops as the seeds mature.  I just sliced it out with the seeds in any ones I got like that.  Maybe try picking them small when they are just solid inside and the seeds are white :)

I have quite a lot that are around 3-5cm long. They feel slightly rubbery/squidgy when I squeeze them.

 Are they eating size now?

Also, the spines are soft, so do I leave these on, please?

That's baby size when you can slice across the whole thing and the seeds should be soft and not really formed yet.  The spines can be left on.  I think they are best fried  :)

I grew quite late so have had no flowers, guess too late now, but enjoyed the rambling nature of it.  Will have another go next year, a have a few seeds left-  When do you sow in the spring?

The flowers are really insignificant in the leaf axils, and mine are still flowering,then producing fruit quite quickly.  Don't give up yet, pigguns  :D

I sowed mine at the end of April, as I was away over Easter this year. Next year it'll be mid- April and I'll pot them on and plant them out once frosts are cleared (This year they had to be covered by upturned bottles and some didn't make it)
