chicken still has a mucky rear end!!
« on: November 05, 2009, 16:13 »
HI, i have 5 chickens which are just coming to point of lay, i have had them from 1 day old chicks, one of them blackburry she is a marian i think, has always had a mucky rear end, the other 4 are fine. i have wormed them, restricted her diet, she is on layers pellets at the moment , but what ever i have done it hasnt changed .not every poo is runny but she was in a bit of a mess, so i clipped her feathers to clean her up and let her skin breath a bit, anyway she has a bit of a pink patch, i havent seen anyone pecking her and i think she is quite high in the pecking order anyway.  should i be putting something on this to help it heal or leave it be , i did think about barrier cream but not sure, should i be taking her to the vets. apart from her diarrhoea she is really bright happy and alert, eats really well maybe too well.

I think some girls just don't "drop their knickers" when they poo.  I have two with constant mucky knickers becasue they just won't squat and drop their knickers like everyone else.  I try to keep their feathers trimmed  in the "drop zone" (almost like the negative of a "brazilian" lol) to prevent the poo getting stuck, and also regular baths to prevent sore and inflamed skin - it's no wonder they won't come anywhere near me and I have to ambush them once they are in bed.

Next time do not clip the feathers.

Next time wash and dry her bottom.

My Magpie has a really fluffy bum and can't help getting it dirty. The vent is clean and clear and she isn't bothered by it but I occasionally sit her on my lap and either massage the feathers with olive oil or wash with soap and warm water. She really enjoys it. ::)

i will try that as she is quite calm, she has just laid her first egg yesterday which was a real shock as i thought they wouldnt lay till next year. i think the whole village heard as she was really proud of herself.
