as above and ensure better ventilation
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Thanks for the replies. I already do all that but I still get problems. I am really stuck with this one. My Dad does not have this problem. His seedlings look really healthy.

Are they getting enough light?  It may be that they get a bit leggy then keel over when watered.

Do you start them off in a propogator?.....if you do, do you remove the lids as soon as they have germinated?

What sort of compost are you sowing them in? some compost stay very wet....and it really only needs to be slightly damp

I keep them on the window ledge so they get enough light and plenty of air. I move them into the room at night so they do not get cold.

I have tried various composts and get the same result.

The stems go thin at the bottom end and then the seedlings fall over. When I had this happen with busy lizzies I pricked them out anyway and they grew new roots. Some seedlings seem to get it worse than others. Brassicas do not seem to get it.

That sounds as if the compost is too wet and/or too cold for a good root system to form :(
