Rabbits and flower beds
« on: July 14, 2011, 08:51 »
We have rabbits on our allotment site.  Part of my new allotement is fenced off, I was thinking of putting in a flower bed at the front of the allotment outside of the fenced area.  I would put in various bulbs and hardy perenials (so it doesn't take too much work) but will the rabbits eat all the flowers, do I have to fence this off too?

We get rabbits in the garden from time to time, even though it is thoroughly fenced. In fact the Collie and I were just chasing one back out into the field this morning! :D From the veg patch - I saw it come in and it was hiding in the red cabbages by the time I got to it!  I find the rabbits don't bother with the flowers, but I suppose depending on which flowers you grow they might find the stems and leaves tasty...  ::)

Well if they eat the pansy's in preference to my veg that would be okay I guess

Can't comment on wild ones but my daughter's rabbit just grazes here and there when its out and about around the garden...

(How nice of her to get a rabbit)  ::)

We had rabbits in the garden a couple of years ago and they had a feast on all sorts of flowers but, it was only the summer bedding they went for particularly cosmos and zinnias (was so cross as I'd grown them lovingly from seed  :tongue2: )

"Ours" (named Pebbles) matches in with the background but is often caught snacking.  >:(

Here it's the pinks that he's taken to.  ::)

we went to the expense of rabbit proofing the garden (completely fenced with wire dug deeply under the soil and curved outwards to stop burrowing).  It worked a treat at keeping wild rabbits out.......my daughter then rescued four RSPCA bunnies who are in our garden and eating us out of house and home (and yes they do like flowers!)
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

Nibble here and a nibble there... so far less damage than the snails.

But don't go out at night with the torch and accidentally toss him over the fence, now, will you?

Interestingly enough it seems to have become my job to make sure Pebbles (the wabbit) is securely tucked up in his two storey (rather plush) hutch every night.  ::)

He is usually fairly obliging and hops in on his own (He'll do almost anything for a carrot!)
