moss in lawn
« on: January 28, 2012, 11:11 »
We had a new lawn laid 2 years ago (turf), there's a poorly draining area next to neighbour's fence which is full of moss now :(
When would be the best time to kill off the moss, and how long would it take before i can rake out the dead moss and reseed it? How can I stop it from happening again please?

Once the spring really is here ie around the beginning of April, you could treat the area with a lawn moss killer, like Evergreen Lawn Moss Killer and Feed (something like that)

The moss will go all black and need raking out.

You will then need to do three things

1. Improve drainage, by spiking about every five/six inches with a fork (right down as far as you can ... not just two inches deep) the lawn and brushing in sand to the holes

2. Feed the lawn so grass will grow more strongly

3. Replant with a grass seed mix especially for shady areas

Then stop the birds from eating the seeds bu covering with some netting propped up on sticks with bottles on the end  ;)

Hope all that helps  :D :D

we have this problem every year.. no matter what I do, we have a lush green spongy carpet of moss. If I cannot get rid of it this year, I might just give in and accept a moss lawn :D

Hi Janey.
Although adviseable to kill the moss and to reseed in the spring you could tackle the drainage issue now. Is it possible to put in a rubble drain taking any excess water away from the area before reseeding.

Moss can be more of a problem if you mow too low.Try raising the mower up a notch. It might make the grass a bit more lush and healthy and so form a good carpet so there won't be space for the moss to form.
