Title: Onion and Shallot Leaves
Post by: barney rubble on May 19, 2009, 17:11
Does anyone know if its Ok to, or partake in eating the leaves of their onions and shallots? Just tasted one of mine as it looked soooo tempting, just like a spring onion. (I'm only kissing the dogs tonight and they don't mind....)

Here in Wales immature shallots are used in place of jibbons ( spring onions :D ) And we all eat the green of Chives.

Are these also called welsh onions or is that something different?

I always use the greens from spring onions, slice them up and add them raw to salads, potato salads etc.  Not sure of what the consequences of taking them from the still growing plant would be though.

Yes  I've had some for breakfast  ::) I think Rubble (the white one) has been on the containers and a few leaves were knocked off - either that or a naughty cat has been in overnight

You can use them like spring onions in omelettes, or cut up in little rings floating in soup , but don't take too much off  as the onion needs leaves to grow

Just pulled a green garlic......had run out and couldn't be bothered to go to the shops for just garlic :) Smells really fresh (of course) and it tastes quite mild like a huge garlic chive
