2 crops of peas?
« on: June 22, 2017, 14:01 »
My two rows of peas do not look as though I will get a decent crop for storing. My question is this - Is there still time to sow and harvest another crop, and if so,which varieties would you recommend.  John.

There is time for a second crop. Just choose a variety that is an "early" one, as these grown and crop more quickly. The old Meteor, Kelvedon Wonder, Feltham First & Early Onward come to mind

Lots out there to choose from 😉

I was wondering the same as my peas have been poor. I think I will have to look for a mildew resistant variety as in the past latter crops succumb

My "early " peas have been good. not yet to harvest but looking good. 5 good rows of a foot wide of peas.  May sow another half bed to get another harvest. Very happy with what the pea bed is looking like at the moment.

Which variety?

I grew Hatif D'Annonnay under a tall cloche and they were very early and we had lots of peas (until the mice found them lol)

Just looked back through the diary and they were Kelvedon Wonder and Douce Provence sown outside on 24 April.  Hoping they will have filled out enough to start picking soon.

Thank you! Good old varieties those. Should be ready for picking soon! I am watering mine like mad in the hope it helps the peas swell more quickly lol

Jumping in as last night I went to have my first pick of my eagerly awaited and absolutely beautiful pea crop. I found that there were hardly any left. Just lots of empty, chewed pods in neat piles under the plants. From the teeth marks I'm pretty sure it's mice. >:( I baited a trap and put it under the plants but when I checked this morning the cheese was gone and the trap hadn't sprung

I have some Hurst Greenshaft coming along that I'm going to attach the cat to, but would like to chance another sowing. I have some Delikett sugar snap seeds. Does anyone know if these are susceptible to mildew and if they would work as an 'early'? Thanks.
