Title: chicken Hair?
Post by: slowef on October 12, 2007, 23:01
My Gold Laced Orpington has marvelous plumage but in between the feathers it looks like long white hairs are growing.  What are these hairs don't seem to see them on the other birds :(

Aunty's scientific answer would be that they are hair like feathers called "rictal bristles" modified from contour feathers meaning they have no vanes.  They are found mostly around the eyes, base of the beak and around the nostrils.

Bristles, ok well we have them in shed loads.

Sorry but in our case thats not right about where they are found, in my Cockerals case he has them all over his body and they are about 2 inches long.  He has loads of them.
