Upright bicycle tyres with their bottom quarter buried in soil make a great support for netting for protecting brassicas and the like.

One of my cycling friends had several old wheels which he asked me to dispose of (he lives in town and has no transport other than bikes, and he is 79). I brought them home in the car and they were left in my yard until a trip to the tip. Then I decided that they would make good supports for netting. I cut out the spokes, then sawed through the rim and opened it out into  a "U" shape. They work well, so I shall probably have a word with our dealer and find out if they have any to dispose of (well they may have to pay to dispose of them).

my dad used to do bike racing - think I'll have to look in his garage as I'm sure he still has got some hanging on his wall - good tip that  :D
