Holding place for fruit trees
« on: December 14, 2010, 22:59 »
My apple and my damson trees (bare rooted) have just arrived, wrapped in straw and plastic and I am keen to get them in the ground but there is warning of more snow, ice and freezing ground this weekend.

Do I pot the trees into large plantpots or compost and keep them in the garage (subdued light though) until the weather improves again? I am concerned the ground will freeze up too much for planting deeply enough for trees.

If you're sure you can't dig deep enough holes now, then by all means, pot them in compost and store them where pests won't chew on the tender trunks. The trees won't grow through the cold weather so no worry if the pots are a bit on the small side. Soon as spring weather allows for proper digging, get them planted asap as they'll already be running sap for new leaves.
