Mrs J kindly pointed out that we haven't sown anything for weeks now so I'm looking for ideas as to what to sow now?
What are you planning on sowing in June?
Cheers
Jim

Runner beans. More carrots.
-
Sweetcorn, cabbage, squash, main crop peas. Asparagus pea have all gone in in the last week

Already in, I have an 8 foot bed x4 rows, plus some in the poly which won't be long. I think I have beetroot chutney covered. maybe a few more rows if I can find space
-
Some back-up beans, in case the earlier lot don't make it, also the courgettes look a bit iffy ::)
Other than that it's Tundra cabbage, Swede, Autumn Calabrese, and more salad stuff ;)
In a few weeks it's the early spring cabbages................
The sowing and harvest chart can help
http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/general/sowing-harvest-vegetable-chart.php
-
I sowed Little Gems and golden beetroot yesterday. More beetroot seed dropped on the mat with my gardening mag today, so more Boltardy , chicory Treviso, and Romaine lettuce, oh and more spring onions and carrots, cannellini beans
-
A similar theme to the others - swede, beetroot, salad leaves & lettuce, chard, and chtting a load more sweetcorn as the first batch was a poor germination and those that came up seem to have stalled even though they are in the greenhouse. I think the nights are still on the cold side. Still to do some turnips and radish
-
second lot of beetroot, radish, rocket and carrots :)
-
I ordered some beans last night!
Other than that I still intend of gettng more of the following underway:
Carrots
Beetroot
Spring Onions
Radish
Salad
I'm way late on these things - never mind!
Hannah :)
-
I forgot more carrots in old black bins.
-
More dwarf french beans, beetroot, turnips, carrots, salad stuff... :)
-
need to put in runner beans, my earlier sown one ahvnt come out and have rotted away :( also perhaps some courgettes since they have not come out again...2nd round of mange tout as well to be sown...i think i watered too heavily the seeds i ha sown resulting in them rotting..
-
more beetroot and carrots. Am I too late for more parsnips? More salad leaves. But I think I've got everything else covered, just need to get on with this weeding and got to build a brassica cage, but debating on whether to do a more permanent frame, or debris netting round and over canes again.
I think too much and don't act fast enough! :( :(
-
need to get carrots in, squash, beetroot.
is it too late to sow broccoli direct?
-
you have all cheered me up as i have had most of the seeds your talking about germinating for the last week or so :) , just need to find room with all the Brassica's we planted out last week  , think we might have to go vegetarian towards the end of the season :tongue2:

If you want calabrese that you eat this Summer/Autumn you might just get away with it. We're trying a fast growing variety calabrese 'sakura' this year. I've got into the swing of successionally sowing a small tray every couple of weeks so we shouldn't, in theory, get a glut! If you want broccoli for next spring then they'll soon have to be sown along with spring cabbages etc...
I am about to plant kohl rabi and parsnips in containers. I'm hoping the parsnips will catch up as it was so cold in April/May. We'll see
-
I only just sowed my Autumn calabrese, so not too late :)
-
So did I :)
I've got no parsnips germinated at all despite two attempts. Florence fennels are sparse too >:(
Today I was mostly sowing direct - golden beetroot, Long Red Onion of Florence, Purplette onion, carrots E Nantes, chicory Treviso, coriander leaf, cos lettuce
-
You can get calabrese at Real Seeds (http://www.realseeds.co.uk/broccoli.html) which can be sown as late as mid July.
-
Just remember realseeds minimum order policy
The Minimum Order is £8 including UK postage
..........................................although I do realise how easy it is to spend much more than that ::)
-
Now, now Mum, you're not encouraging people to buy more seed are you? I thought we decided to blame Growster for that? :tongue2:
Though I was eyeing up the melon seeds on there earlier, wondering if I was too late for a fast growing variety and then I'd have to order some other things to make up the cost..........
-
I've got all of my summer squashes, sweetcorns etc in, but have just sowed some back up courgettes and a couple of pumpkins incase my award winning one dies. :D
Other than that have started thinking about later on in the year when all of the "exciting" stuff has been harvested and the plot is bare so have sowed a load of swedes, more leeks, chinese cabages and brocolli to hopefully fill the spaces by my bumper summer crop. Will no doubt sow some more cabbages, kale, pak choi when I get a minute for some more planting around the end of july...although I haven't got a clue where I will fit it all!
-
Sowed some salad leaves last Sun and there is germination already! :)

Oi you! - It was al78 that put up the realseeds link - I can't take the blame for that ::)

More lettuces (various) including raddichio; french climbing beans; dinky turnips; carrots; salad leaves; more Bigga pea shoots for salad; beetroot; spring onions and more basil and greek oregano for starters :D

What are dinky turnips.? Not that I have any room but if they are dinky.
-
Ooh, ooh they've got something called rapini on the real seed website. Tastes like broccoli, but is a member of the turnip family. You can plant it midsummer for an Autumn harvest. I still can't do the linky thing, I'm so sorry, Auntie M did try and tell me but no go. Oh errr,  I think I might be encouraging seed buying now........ :tongue2:

Purple Top Milan
I harvest them about tennis ball sized - they're nice in soups and stews :)
I've never had much luck with swedes - they tend to be bigger as well. Take up more space.
-
I will be direct sowing Borlotti Beans & Shiraz Snow Peas over the next few days, and resowing a tray of Kale for the 3RD TIME! Must get more light to them, they just keep stretching falling over and dying.

We sow these close together and harvest them slightly smaller - they push each other apart. They are tasty in a onion, butter and cream bake .... Delicious. Really good crop for any tiny spaces and succession sowings

rapini, also known as cima di rapa, is absolutely delicious, treat it just like broccoli. i would say it is a little more hardy than broccoli. just cut what you need and it will grow back just as much even if you cut back hard, lasted ages. it has lovely yellow flowers too which taste very nice and look good in a salad.

Can I assume that as it is a member of the turnip family that it wouldn't interfer with brassica rotation? Thanks!
-
Just sown some purple french beans and some tokyo bekana (I don't like lettuce very much)that MoS was posting about. Also some Helianthus that should've been in a couple of weeks ago

Ooh I was looking at this earlier in the year.
If you recommend it, I might get some next year :)
-
I thought cima was a member of the broc family. I used to grow it for me and the hens as it's packed with calcium :)
-
I'm still sowing carrots every 2-3 weeks.
That rapini looks very interesting, not sure I'll have room for it though, I've got four packets of oriental and leaf greens waiting to be sown after midsummer.
-
We need to know about this rapini! On the real seed website it says it is a member of the turnip family. I can't do a link Arrrggghhhhh!!!!! I'm sorry Auntie M :( I've let you down :(
-
Cima di Rapa means "turnip tops" but it's a brassica
"Rapini is classified scientifically as Brassica rapa subspecies rapa,[1] in the same subspecies as the turnip"
It's quick and easy to grow but it does go to seed quickly, esp in hot weather. Chooks won't mind though
-
Just got wonderful OH to help me do linky thing  http://www.realseeds.co.uk/broccoli.html

Well done :)

I fank yoooooo <takes a bow>

Swede, kohl rabi, turnips and brocolli/calabrese are all brassicas, but as cima di rapa, and baby turnips are so quick growing............. I'd just pop some in wherever you have little bit of room ;)
-
Thanks Mum! :)

I hope not cos I sowed some last week. I sowed some Mangetout (the purple one) yesterday and I planted some more onion sets that I got for cheap from the local DIY store.

Or in other words, the pigeons, slugs and caterpillars will all love it and it needs netting!

Ha! Hello Auntie M  I've managed to resist the urge to order the rapini. I'm getting itchy fingers though...... and this calabrese looks good. I'm doing well with calabrese 'sakura' though...

I'm afraid I failed to resist the dwarf funner beans Maxi, they look so pretty! ::)

They do and they are! I wish I'd sown a few dwarfs to keep at home. Is it too late? I have happy growing memories of dwarf beans.... so prolific and tasty too .......
-
I've sown my winter cabbages (2 sorts) and some Autumn Green Calabrese.
Oh and more salad leaves :)
-
Do you sow your winter cabbages direct or in pots etc like I did for my summer ones? I am also a bit annoyed as I wanted red cabbage this year (the right, ball-like ones) and bought a variety from Dobies that said red cabbage... It is definitely a leafy green with red stems though and not what I would call a red cabbage! Oh well this is only my first year so lesson learnt :)
-

Pretty sure you have time Maxi. ;)

Yes I grow them in modules, and may even have to pot them into bigger pots - cos some of them have to wait until the potatoes come out.
With red cabbage it's usually only the centre hearts that look really red. You won't see that until you cut them for harvest ;)

You are very bad for encouraging me to buy more seeds. I might cheat and buy a couple of plants instead. We're off to a garden centre near my Dads tomorrow so I'll have a look there.... I'm only taking cash though - will leave the bank cards at home
-
I'm going to be sowing some more dwarf beans :)
-
We sowed more carrots today, well when i say we, i mean hubby. I lay on the sofa wrapped in a duvet watching through the window.
I think thats five black bins now all a week or so apart.
How much longer can i keep sowing them for, determined to get decent carrots for once.
-
I've sown Autumn king carrots, flat leaf parsley, and rocket! Meant to sow a lot more but ran out of time 8)
-
Found a packet of mooli seed so put some of those in. Also lettuce and ordinary radishes.
-
Last weekend, a second planting of purple teepee dwarf beans (last year they kept producing right through October); more radishes, including a second attempt at spanish black radishes, which didn't work first time around; and yet more salad leaves.
-
Have collected last month's poached egg seeds and have sown four contained beds around the plot. Should be a riot next May with the foxgloves and forget-me-nots.
