Hi there, we have only got 1 chicken at the moment since we lost pipsqueak about 4 weeks ago and my quesrtion is would being on her own be the reason marmalade has got noisier, she is healthy in every other way, giving us an egg a day, we were going to wait until spring to get a new girl
-
dont leave her too long on her own as chickens are social creatures and love company - this will be why she has got noisier - she needs another chicken or two to chat with.
-
I would get her company now as she's telling you she's distressed. Get her two POL's asap :) You could consider giving her away to someone with room to spare rather than let her be alone which she'll hate :(
-
There is no way on earth my girl is going anywhere, space is not a problem. >:(
-
You probably know that you should keep any new girls separate but within view of your resident hen. Firstly to make sure they are not carrying any diseases or mites and secondly so they can get used to each other without actually having to be in close contact.
-
I didn't mean space as in plenty of room for her, I meant someone who could take her so she wouldn't be alone :(
-
dont leave her alone too long, when we were down to 1 , sally was ok for a short time, but started to go downhill quickly, since we got some more she is now back to being top hen, they really do need company
-
getting a new girl tomorrow either a maran or a cream legbar, dont know whether its best to get a younger girl than marmalade or 1 about same age, which do you think she will accept best?
-
Oooh I don't know, but someone will have the answer for you, hopefully quite soon
She'll be much happier with a friend :)

And now introducing Bramble our new girl
