Re-engineering a greenhouse
« on: April 22, 2008, 13:05 »
been given a greenhouse, very odd size and the glass is 29inch sq, problem is there is 4 panes missing, so just rang around and I am looking at £46 for replacement,    now Iam thinking this greenhouse is to be used as a nursery greenhouse, so now I am thinking of re-engineering the frame to cut it short by a section, anyone done this, I figure 5 cuts should do the job.

£46 doesn't sound too much to me.

Other choice is to pick up some twin wall polycarbonate sheeting from DIY place. I use it to replace panes in my greenhouse. It not see through like glass but it does a good job.

I just picked up a great big sheet of it half price in Wickes - £20.

ok, having checked it out, thought long and hard, drunk a bit, thought about it again, had a chat with a retired glass chap who will cut me glass we have come up with a cunning plan  :D  each section is 29 inch in width, we are going to reduce one to the standard 24inch, this will give us the glass required for the other sections, I have loads of 24inch glass so should be ok. Oh I do hold O level Engingeering Workshop Practice, but that a long time ago  :? So this weekend will be the one, got lots of beer in just need the sun

well. its sorted, took just over an hour to cut, drill and re-bolt it back together. Just need to alter the base now and I can glaze it. So I did learn something at school after all

Got round to finally glazing it, one pane broke in half as I was inserting it into the roof, not sure what happened other than 1 minute it was in one piece and as I lifted it, it snapped in half, fell, hit the step ladder inside bounced off that and hit the two side panes, 3 F iiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnggggggg panes of glass went in one go, so I was in the same position as before I started, one chap came running over to see me having a smashing time and offered some polycarb sheeting. So I now have me nursery greenhouse up with me little seedlings happy as pig in muck.
