I purchased a few bales of straw when the weather was really cold at the start of the year, and placed them in the chicken run, which is covered. When the ground was really frozen, the girls used to sit on them to keep themselves off the cold ground.

I wasn't using a spare coop last year (my hospital/broody coop) so I openend the main door and put a load of straw in there during the heavy snow. It wasn't unusual to turn up and see the whole area deserted of chickens only to find them all packed into the little shed - 30 chickens (at the time) packed into an area 6'x6'! They really hated the snow!
