thermal image of hen keeping warm
« on: December 17, 2009, 08:51 »
my OH took this image with his thermal imaging camera.  It shows how little heat is being lost through the feathers.

Just a little reassurance to all you worried poultry keepers out there thinking that the hens will be cold this winter!

The darker the colour the colder the area, see how the head is warm, that's presumably why they tuck their heads under their wings at night!

Fantastic. Many thanks. Always amazes me how warm their feet are, yet they stand in icy cold water.

That is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing :D :D
A daft question, is the body dark because they are not losing heat? (scatches head!)

yes foxy, the feathers are keeping the heat close to the body so no heat loss is shown.

:) Hi Sam
Very impressive, and thats given me an idea, a week from now if I should arrive home in a drunken stuper (not that I would obviously ;)) from socially wishing colleagues a Merry Christmas :D, and should I be disowned by my "Hello darling wifey poos" hic!  I could if I can find my way without falling in the pond , sleep in the coop with only the girls for a blanket and stay warm? hmmm........

:D Wishing you all an early MERRY CHRISTMAS & a very Happy New Year!  :D

Best Regards

Steve

for the first time EVER, every single one of my choox went properly to bed inside their coops, no rescuing any from the trees,  no-one perching on top of the coop, just an inch out of reach. It was actually a pleasure to say goodnight to them tonight :D  and...instead of slipsliding onto my bum in the mud, I can slip on the ice! >:(

Wow!  I know this thread is almost a year old now, but I think it's well worth bringing back to the top for newbies like me.

Not only does it explain why hens don't seem too worried about the cold, but it also explains why an eider-down quilt is so warm and why polar explorers wore quilted down jackets.

I'm impressed!
