Innoculating chicks
« on: March 28, 2009, 19:48 »
Hi everybody, 1st post but i have been watching, laughing and learning from this forum since Christmas.
I have 3 chooks a Rhode IR a Light Sussex and a speckled cross who is inclined to go broody. If i set her on a fertile clutch and she produces a bunch of chicks is it a vets only job to innoculate against  diseases at the chick stage or is something the amateur breeder can legally  learn to do and are the drugs readily available.

Think a few of us have looked into this in the past.
Generally innoculation is undertaken on a big scale (usually comes to dose 1000 chicks etc) so small scale breeders tend not to bother particularly as backyard poultry keepers tend to keep them in such different setting to commercial farms that infectious diseases is not so much of a problem.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Hi 8doubles

Welcome to the Hen House :D

As Kate say's it's not something smaller breeders do :)

So long as the eggs you get are from good parent stock (not always easy to check I know), you feed them medicated chick crumbs to protect against coccidiosis and keep them clean and warm then there shouldn't be a problem :D

Thanks Kate and Sarah , with all the poultry nasties there seem to be about i wondered if there were vaccines available in small amounts . When the chooks move out of a dustbath the resident flock of 'spadgers' move in , keeps 'em fit chasing them about but you never know where they`ve been.
