Title: a very sore chicken
Post by: STEVE B on July 22, 2007, 15:02
Hi
I saw one of my chickens walking  around my garden as if it had three babies nappies on. It then layed an egg. Trouble is I think  that the egg had cracked inside. The egg came out without the shell . It now looks like it is in a bit of discomfort.
Is there anyone that can give me advice and help me get her back to her happy normal self

Hi there, when I was a child we had all sorts of chicks, ducks and geese.  If I remember rightly a lack of grit in their diet can cause either week shells or problems such as you are having.  I know things have changed in the last millenium, but I hope this is of some help to you. :)

I'm afraid this sounds like the start of egg peritonitis to me.  How old is the hen and what breed ?

Hello again
She is about 12 months old and has a regular supply of grit with crushed oyster shell.
Some of the eggs she has laid have been huge. My eyes water just looking at them so I was wondering if that had anything to do with it.
I hope someone can give me some advice.
Gave the vet a ring but the signal is lousy so I cant get through. Trouble is my nearest vet is 30 miles away.
                                     thanks Steve

Update your profile Steve to add your location.  You don't sound as if you live near civilisation !

Has your hen missed laying any eggs recently or layed any soft shelled ones ?

Hi
No ,she averages about 5 eggs per week but none since her problem.
My wife has got to go to the dentist thursday(I have just found out) so I will take her to the vets. I will let you know what the outcome is.

This is what I feared Steve.  I think she has egg peritonitis.  The vet will treat with antibiotics and she may make a good recovery.  Do let us know how she goes, but don't be too optimistic for a long life for her  :(
