Splitting Swede Problem
« on: June 20, 2007, 21:49 »
Hi
I was really proud of my swede plants until I pulled one up (just to see how things were going  :D).  The root was only small but unfortunately split, so I pulled up two more and they were both split   I gather its because of dry spells, and my lack of watering
Does this mean the whole crop it ruined, can I salvage anything?

I consider its early to be pulling swedes, they are a winter crop. by the time you will be harvesting them nov onwards ,the splits will be surface cos the reat will have grown from tennis ball size to much bigger . So the water in your part opf the world has been sporadic , if they are growing they are doing OK ! The split will heal over . They'll still be useable !

if they split then its wide open to soft rot if that dont happen then they tend to go woody,i only sown mine a few weeks ago but this afternoon they were under water so i might have to sow again, will see whats has happened when the tide goes out.

They are the size of golf balls, not exactly exactly harvestable.  I'm glad there a chance they will survive.  Will leave them where they are an hope for the best.  This is my first growing season and I was very pleased that I had successfully transplanted my swedes, then I found they had split.  This allotment malarkey is a rollercoaster of emotion
Thank you,
