RUNNER BEANS
« on: April 30, 2012, 09:10 »
Hi, I'm not sure whether it is too late to sow my runner beans indoors. Should I wait until mid May now to sow direct? Would I gain anything by planting indoors timewise as I think those planted outdoors would catch up anyway. Please advise, Ian

I'm not going to sow mine until mid-May, I am always taken by surprise by how quickly they grow, and have trouble holding them back until it's safe to plant them outside. Even if sowing direct I would wait until mid-May.

It is not too late. I sowed a few last week but plan on sowing another batch in a couple of weeks time so I get cropping over a longer period.

Thanks for your both quick replies. I think I will leave it until mid may now. It will save faffing about replanting them. It's only a few weeks.

I usually do some direct and some in pots, just in case.  Not done any yet but it's not been fit to do anything has it  :)

Would certainly hold off, late frosts can play havoc with runner/dwarf beans.  Remember 'an early Gardner is a busy Gardner'  Too early and you end up doing it twice!!

I like that!  I'm always doing everything 2 weeks after I should have done.  :)

Slugs have always eaten my direct sown beans.

I shall be starting off beans indoors next weekend.  Might be more faff but at least I'll be guaranteed a plant  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I will be starting mine off the weekend after next - mid May.  I won't plant out to the first week in June and I don't want them all leggy and tangled up.
