Sea Weed
« on: December 05, 2011, 18:42 »
A number of the other plot holders have put seaweed on next year's potato beds at my site. They have just spread the stuff on top of the soil and it does not look like is rotting down too quick.

Should it be dug in and if so will it remove nutrients from the soil if I were to put some down?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

isn't seaweed very salty? does it need to be left soaking in water before put in soil?

It's not too salty but apparently worms don't like what salt there is so I always leave it in a sack with drain holes to allow the rains to give it a good clean. Like they say, dig it in or leave it as a mulch. I tend to compost mine or make a liquid feed.

I have tried several ways with seaweed, in the muck, in the compost heap and popped on the bed over winter and if I am honest I can honestly say that I cannot see any difference in growth or taste with it added!

Having said that, I swear by liquid seaweed extract for my seedlings etc, I have noticed increased root growth when compared to just plain old water.

but you wouldn't unless you ran a control test at the same time in soil with nothing added, then you could compare the two.

I use it....it's high in potash so good for fruit,I've spread it on top and dug it in, I thnk you would have to put an awful lot on for salt to be an issue.
Only gather washed up stuff after storms, dont gather growing seaweed.
